Butenko Hennadii was born on August 21, 1932, in Myrhorod. He graduated from the Odesa Medical Institute in 1956. In 1962-1971 worked at the Kyiv Medical Institute, since 1971 – head of the laboratory, since 1992 – Deputy Director of the Institute of Gerontology of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine, since 2007 – Director of the Institute of Genetic and Regenerative Medicine of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine. Academician of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine (1994).
Scientific works are devoted to the problems of the biology of aging, in particular the study of the mechanisms and consequences of age-related disorders of the immune system. Created model systems (heterochronous chimeras, heterochronous parabiosis) and approaches to assessing the immune status of the elderly; showed the role of immunological mechanisms in the pathogenesis of the main forms of age-related pathology – atherosclerosis, coronary heart disease, hypertension, parkinsonism, Alzheimer's disease and others.
